What’s Not Important on Your Resume (and What Is)

Hey there! Let’s cut through the noise about resumes. If you’re stressing over tiny details, we’re here to help. At Synergy HR, we want to make it easy for you to focus on what really matters.

Here’s what we don’t care about (so you can stop stressing), and what we do care about when we’re reviewing resumes.

What’s Not Important

1. Word or PDF Format

Either works! A PDF keeps your formatting intact, but it’s not a dealbreaker. We’re here for the content, not the file type. Whether you upload a Word document or a PDF, the key is ensuring the information is easy to read. Don’t overthink it—just send it in!

2. Number of Bullet Points

We’re not counting them. Highlight the big stuff in a few clear points, and you’re golden. Think of bullet points as a way to showcase your most relevant accomplishments, not every single task you’ve ever done. Less is often more when it comes to grabbing attention.

3. Resume Length

One page? Two pages? Doesn’t matter. If your experience is relevant, take the space you need to tell your story. That said, don’t feel pressured to fill extra space. If you can keep it to one page, great! If not, that’s okay too.

4. Document Title

Sure, it’s nice if your resume title is something like First Name Last Name Resume, but we’re not picky. As long as we can find it, you’re good! Spend time polishing the content, not worrying about the file name.

What Is Important

1. Where You’ve Worked and When

We want to see your work history and the timeline of your experience. Show us where you’ve been and what you’ve done. This helps us match your skills and background with the job you’re applying for.

2. Being Local

We value local connections, and being nearby is a big plus. If you’ve recently moved to the area, make sure your resume reflects your current location. For instance, if we receive two resumes—one from Harrison, AR, and one from Bismarck, ND—we’re going to prioritize the local candidate. Most of the roles we fill are for businesses in the area, and they’re typically looking for people who already live here or nearby. Update your resume to show you’re local—it makes a difference!

3. Clear Contact Info

Make it easy for us to reach you. A phone number and email are must-haves! If you’re on LinkedIn, you can include your profile, too. Just make sure your contact details are up to date.

When it comes down to it, a resume doesn’t need to be perfect—it just needs to be clear and focused. At Synergy HR, we’re all about making the hiring process simple and stress-free for you. So, stop overthinking and let’s work together to find your next great opportunity!
